Science That Shapes the Future — Our PhD Students at EGU General Assembly 2026
From May 3–8, four of our PhD students represented the Faculty at the EGU General Assembly 2026 — one of the most important and largest scientific events in Europe dedicated to Earth, environmental, and climate sciences. This year’s edition of the conference took place in Vienna in a hybrid format, bringing together around 20,000 scientists from around the world representing 22 geoscience disciplines.
Our PhD students presented research results focused on:
- glacier change and monitoring,
- environmental monitoring of mining areas using remote sensing data and geospatial analyses,
- microplastics in the environment.
These research topics address some of today’s most pressing global challenges related to climate change, environmental protection, and the development of modern research technologies. The presented projects demonstrate how science and engineering can directly influence the way we understand and protect the world around us.
The conference, organized by the European Geosciences Union, also serves as a platform for international scientific exchange, collaboration, and the presentation of innovative research directions in Earth and environmental sciences. Young researchers and PhD students play a particularly important role during the event, gaining the opportunity to present their achievements to the international scientific community.
The participation of our PhD students in such a prestigious event is also proof that modern education does not end with obtaining an engineering degree. Today’s world needs people who can analyze data, solve complex problems, combine technology with social responsibility, and confidently ask questions about the future. It needs scientists. People with passion.
That is why we encourage students to continue their academic journey through Master’s studies. This stage opens the door to ambitious research projects, international cooperation, scientific conferences, and technologies that define the future of modern science and industry.
Master’s studies are more than just another diploma. They provide a space to develop individual interests, build expert competencies, and gain experiences that make a real impact on science, the environment, and emerging technologies.
Because the future belongs to those who dare to explore it.
